When do the Great Migration river crossings happen?

The Great Migration’s Mara River crossings generally occur between July and October in the northern Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Exact timing depends on rainfall and herd movements, so crossings cannot be guaranteed; spending several nights at a suitably located camp gives you more opportunities to witness one.

Migration

The migration is a continuous movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem rather than a single annual crossing.

Herds may gather near a river for hours or days before entering the water. They may also cross more than once or move away without crossing.

To plan effectively:

  • Match your camp location to your travel dates.
  • Allow several nights in the relevant area.
  • Remain flexible about daily activities.
  • Appreciate other wildlife rather than making one event the sole measure of the trip.

Responsible viewing means giving animals space and following park and guide instructions.
