What is the best age to take children on safari?

There is no universal best age for a safari, although children around six and older may find longer game drives easier to enjoy. Younger children can have excellent experiences at suitable family lodges, provided you check vehicle restrictions, activity minimum ages, accommodation arrangements and the pace of the itinerary.

Choose a safari around your children’s interests, attention spans and usual routines.

Useful features include:

  • Family rooms or interconnected accommodation.
  • Flexible meals and shorter activities.
  • Children’s programmes.
  • A private vehicle, particularly when travelling with younger children.
  • Suitable swimming-pool supervision and clear camp safety arrangements.

Lodge policies vary, and some restrict younger children on shared drives. Walking safaris and other specialist activities have separate age requirements; Rwanda’s gorilla trekking minimum age is 15.

Allow time to rest between activities, and discuss the health requirements of your full itinerary with a healthcare provider.
