Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a first safari?

Both Tanzania and Kenya are excellent choices for a first safari, with the better option depending on your dates, interests and preferred pace. Kenya offers private conservancies and varied safari activities, while Tanzania appeals to travellers wanting to combine the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and other northern-circuit parks.

Choose Kenya if you want:

  • Wildlife viewing in the Maasai Mara and other contrasting ecosystems.
  • Private conservancies offering activities permitted under their individual rules.
  • Opportunities to combine safari with Nairobi or the Kenyan coast.

Choose Tanzania if you want:

  • A northern-circuit journey through parks such as Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
  • Southern Serengeti calving-season experiences.
  • A safari followed by time in Zanzibar.

Both countries offer migration experiences, but herd locations change throughout the year. Journey times also depend on your route and whether you travel by road or air.
