Is it safe to go on an African safari?

A guided African safari can be a safe and rewarding experience when planned with reputable operators, although wildlife encounters and travel always involve some risk. Follow guide and camp instructions, review advice for your specific destinations, and arrange suitable insurance covering your activities and emergency medical evacuation.

Safari safety depends on the destination, operator, activities and your own behaviour.

During your trip:

  • Remain in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise.
  • Keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
  • Never feed or attempt to touch wild animals.
  • Follow camp instructions, including escort arrangements after dark.
  • Tell your operator about relevant medical or mobility needs.

Some camps are unfenced, allowing wildlife to move through the property. Follow the briefing even when animals appear calm.

Check your insurance carefully: the availability of evacuation services does not mean their costs are included in your safari.
