Building Impact, Not Just Code: Why Fair Trade Safaris Was Born

Tech entrepreneur Saurabh Khetrapal left the fast-paced world of coding to create something far more meaningful—Fair Trade Safaris, a luxury travel company that donates 100% of its profits to conservation and community upliftment. In this story, he shares his journey from startup success to purpose-driven impact, with insights on ethical travel, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and building a business that gives back.

Saurabh Khetrapal

From Silicon Valley to the Serengeti

In the early days of his career, Saurabh was the picture of startup success. Building tech companies, chasing funding rounds, scaling teams—he had it all. But as the achievements piled up, so did a nagging sense of emptiness. "I realized I wasn't serving anything bigger than myself," he reflects. "And I wanted that to change."

That internal spark led Saurabh to explore the world beyond code. What he discovered was a passion for conservation, community upliftment, and the raw, life-changing beauty of Africa.

Building a Business That Gives Back

In 2014, Fair Trade Safaris was born. Unlike typical luxury safari operators, Saurabh launched the company with a bold promise: 100% of profits would be donated to wildlife conservation and local community development.

The goal? Build a business where impact was hardcoded into its DNA. "We don't do tourism. We do transformation," he says. "Every safari helps support education, healthcare, and local community development projects in the areas we visit."

A Safe Place to Be You

Fair Trade Safaris isn’t just about giving back to nature and communities. It’s also about creating emotional safety for travelers—especially those who haven’t always been welcomed with open arms in every corner of the world.

"There are places in the world where you're not safe. And when you go on safari, you're not only safe physically. You're safe emotionally too," Saurabh shares.

A Conversation Worth Watching

In a recent video interview hosted by Case Erickson, Saurabh dives deeper into the origins of Fair Trade Safaris. They explore how a high-octane tech career gave way to a mission of meaning—and what it takes to build a business that leads with heart.

"Whether you're a dreamer, a disruptor, or someone looking for meaningful adventure, this story proves it's never too late to rewrite your legacy."
